“The simple
desire that I had initially, to go faster on the bike, transformed into a
newfound obsession with pain and speed. Let the racing begin!”
Tom’s first road race was the Columbus Stage Race in 2003 and has been
hooked ever since. Tom moved from beginner to Cat 3 in a short amount of
time while accumulating a long list of top finishes. Some of his highlights
are: as a Cat 4 1st place at the State Team Time Trial as well as 1st place
at the Tour of Columbus RR1. In 2005 as a Cat 3, Tom place 2nd at the East
Texas Classic RR and place 3rd at the Michelob Ultra RR. Already in 2006,
Tom has been able to place well in all of the racing to date with a 2nd
place finish at the PURE Austin RR. Tom’s ultimate goal is to become a Cat 1
level road racer. In addition to this, he wants to ride in the RAAM.
Bicycling started for Tom with BMX back when he was just a kid. Initially,
just for transportation, but then turned into dirt track racing. It wasn’t
until after college that he bought his first road bike – a pink Raleigh
Sport 600, you know the one with down tube shifters. In 1999, Tom started
competing in triathlons and shortly afterwards decided to try his luck at
road racing. Soon after the switch, he adopted the motto “I don’t ride! I
train!” Tom’s favorite races are the long, hot and hilly one day races as
well as time trials. I enjoy making my competition suffer, but love making
myself suffering more.
When Tom is not training or racing, he sits behind a desk for Shell Oil
Company in their research department. His other interests besides cycling
are gardening and playing the guitar. He is currently working on his BS in
Chemistry at The University of Houston – Clear Lake and wants to then get
his MS in Physics. He and his soul mate Laura plan on starting a family very
soon.
