"I love
the science of improving myself. Hey, it’s my vocation!"
Kirk says his accomplishments in cycling are a lot of pain and suffering!
Well, he has placed in the top 5 several times on the mountain bike in the
Sport category at Huntsville, and has had good placings as a Cat 5 and 4; he
is working for the big results as a 3. In 2006, he is finishing consistently
in the 20-25th range.
Kirk’s goals in cycling are to continue to improve physiologically. Also, he
wants to become a better tactical racer. One year, he wants to dedicate to
mountain biking and see how good he can do at that.
Kirk started out cycling by doing two-man 6 and 12 hr MTB races. His first
race was 6 hrs at Rocky Hill, August 2001. He and his teammate, Dr. D,
finished top five in the two-man category. His first road race was the 2001
Cat 5 State Championship finishing 22nd.
A mentally strong racer, Kirk does the best in long, cold, rainy races in
which half the field just gives up (Walburg!). He says he still haven’t kept
a two-year old promise that he WILL buy a pair of warm, WATERPROOF gloves!
Working as an exercise physiologist at NASA, Kirk also teaches a class in
the Exercise Science program at the University of Houston, Clear Lake. Kirk
loves his job! Anything that has to do with physical stress, strain,
elevated hart rate, or science is good by him!
